The Home Max only has two tweeters and two 4.5-inch woofers, with an emphasis on producing lots of bass. Maybe it’s because Google is confident in the playback capabilities, but just having the option to hook up the Home Mini to an external speaker would have been a very nice addition here. Nonetheless, we’ll have to deal with the tiny speaker in the Home Mini to provide our content for the time being. Both of these options are extremely easy, but if you have either product placed across the room, voice activation will likely be the most commonly used method. Just keep in mind that commercials or TV content may end up activating either assistant since these are both always listening for the hot phrase.
How does Google Home work with appliances?
Sure, it’s a minor point, but if you want a smart home controller that blends in perfectly with your home decor, then Google Home is the better choice. If you’ve got a $35 Google Chromecast dongle plugged into your television, you can use Google Home to control what you play. It also works with Chromecast audio, basically allowing you to have full control, with just your voice, of a lot of entertainment options. If you're comparing the Dot with a cheap kitchen radio or a bedroom alarm clock, it's absolutely fine.
That said, you can't yet fully control any TV with Google Home. You won't be able to turn your TV off with a voice command, for instance. Google showed off that ability at I/O though, so full TV control could be on the way.

The Dot can recognize its trigger word better than the old one if it's playing music, or if it's connected to an adjacent speaker playing music. That's not foolproof, though; especially with hip-hop playing through an attached external speaker, it may hear the lyrics as speech and be unable to figure out when a command ends. In a quiet room, both the old and new Dots have about a 50-foot range for voice commands. The Dot's biggest advantage over the Mini is the 3.5 mm stereo output port which allows you to connect it to your own speakers. Plug in the Dot, and you can add voice controls to your own sound setup.

But you can connect the Dot to an additional speaker via a standard 3.5mm cable or Bluetooth. We compared the new Dot with the original and with a JBL Clip 2, an Editors' Choice for inexepensive Bluetooth speakers. The Clip 2 has a considerable amount of lower midrange presence, giving depth and richness to music that's completely missing from both Dots.
Check out Ty Pendlebury's detailed breakdown of how the Home does versus the Echo in terms of sound quality. In short, he recommends if you're just looking for a high-fidelity Bluetooth speaker -- keep looking. Google Home can sync audio playback on multiple speakers. Here’s another music feature that the Echo Dot simply doesn’t have.
It also does a fine job of understanding you when you speak. Google goes out of its way to boost Assistant’s appeal by getting it to understand the many ways you may say things. In turn, that usually creates fewer instances of times when Assistant fails to understand you and says it can’t answer your question. Assistant has been getting a whole lot better over the past few years too -- allowing you to even do things like book tables at restaurants and order Uber rides, among other things.
Alexa gave me a bunch of companies that have the word ‘ten’ in their name. Alexa listed a few popular nearby pizza restaurants but gave the names of places over four miles away as it used my home address rather than my current location. I only knew this because I really like pizza and recognised some of them - Alexa didn’t offer any other details.

So if you have a lot of smart home devices already, Alexa might be your best bet. There's been a recent change which means that the shopping list goes to the Google Express app. Google Express is Google's shopping service which is only available in some areas in the US and not at all in the UK. It used to link to Google Keep which would have been much more useful for us. We were surprised to find that Google Home doesn't have a read aloud feature yet and also doesn't have audio books because Google Play doesn't sell them.
Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions.See how we test. Though Google usually plays well with others, that has not been the case thus far with the Home. The company is still trying to find its bearings and its partnerships are limited to a select few companies. Even now, with lots of I/O upgrades still on the horizon, since the Google Assistant can get to know your whole family, the Home's ready to take this category from the Echo. The Echo also lets you set reminders and make to-do lists, and the Google Home still falls short at a few of those sorts of basic tasks. It doesn't, for instance, let you change anything on your calendar yet. Google showed off better integration with its apps at I/O, including the ability to pull up search results on your TV with Chromecast. Better yet, if your TV supports CEC , you can turn on your TV with Google Home by asking it to play something.
That gets announced on the google homes at 2 in the morning. Yes this happened and yes that sucked getting woken up but much better than not finding out until a wake up to the notification on my phone. And not quite as menacing as setting off the siren that I use for the security system. More deals are likely to come as we get closer to the end of the year and as some of the higher-end products make it to market.
